AEP-NOAA Greenhouse Gas Measurement Flights

Carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and meteorological parameters were continuously measured from aircraft that flew polygons around oil and gas extraction and upgrading facilities, primarily in the Athabasca Oil Sands Region. An algorithm can be applied to these data to estimate hourly emission rates.

Measurements of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and greenhouse gases (GHGs) were also collected on a selected number of flights as discrete samples. These data can aid in source identification of sampled air masses.

Usage Considerations or Constraints See README file for detailed considerations and constraints. These data can be used to estimate emissions of CH4 and CO2, using methods described in Conley et al. (2017). Flights have not been screened for suitability for emissions estimates. Only some flights are appropriate for emissions estimates, based on factors such as maximum flight altitude relative to the boundary layer, proximity to emissions sources, and meteorological conditions. Prior to calculating emissions estimates, appropriate screening criteria must be developed and applied to the flights.
