The North Athabasca Oil Sands (NAOS) regional groundwater monitoring system was established in 2009
to assess regional baseline conditions and to facilitate an understanding of potential cumulative effects
of oil sands activities on regional groundwater quality and quantity. The NAOS monitoring network
currently includes monitoring wells installed by Alberta Research Council in the 1970s, and Alberta
Geological Survey in the 1990s, and wells provided by various operators in recent years to enhance the
network.
