Predicting entrainment of Bow River sportfish populations into the Carseland Bow River Headworks and Western Headworks Canals

The report describes sport fish losses due to entrainment in major water diversions from the Bow River between Calgary and the Bassano Dam. Fish entrainment was initially estimated by expanding annual fish rescue data collected from 2001-2023, following methods developed in an earlier study. Entrainment is linked to Bow River sport fish population estimates from 1999-2023. Uncertainty in annual entrainment and population estimates is accounted for using a bootstrapping approach and a hierarchical Bayesian model (HBM) is used to evaluate flow covariates and predict entrainment as a proportion of the Bow River population. Effects of entrainment on sport fish populations are described and recommendations are provided to support fish and water management decision-making.
