Applying and testing a novel method to estimate animal density from motion-triggered cameras

This paper describes a novel approach to estimate animal density using images from camera traps without the need for individual identification, using the time spent in front of the camera (TIFC). Results from nearly 3000 cameras deployed over 6 years across Alberta, Canada, are provided, and key assumptions of the method are tested. Moose (Alces alces) densities estimated at the Wildlife Management Unit (WMU) scale are reported and compared to densities estimated using aerial surveys.
