Erosion potential of dynamic ice breakup in Lower Athabasca River. Part II; Field data analysis and interpretation

Highlights •Methodology is developed for analysis of unique field data set on ice breakup processes. •Analysis quantifies key hydrodynamic variables during the breakup event. •Velocity, discharge, and bed shear stress can exceed 4 m/s, 10,000 m3/s, and 100 Pa. •Corresponding highest known open-water values are 2.5 m/s, 4440 m3/s, and 35 Pa. •A dynamic breakup event can supply a significant fraction of the annual sediment load.
