This digital data release contains elevation values for Bonnyville Formation units 1 and 2 as well as the inter-till sand in the South Athabasca Oil Sands (SAOS) region in northeastern Alberta. Elevation values were derived from new picks from oil and gas geophysical logs, supplemented by picks from published and unpublished sources in Alberta Geological Survey (AGS) holdings.
Purpose:
To provide elevation values of the near-surface Quaternary sediment units for mapping the distribution of Quaternary sediments in the South Athabasca Oil Sands (SAOS) region.

Title:
Modelled Surfaces of the Bonnyville Formation (Units 1 and 2, and Inter-Till Sand) in the South Athabasca Oil Sands (SAOS) Region (gridded data, ASCII format)
Geospatial Data Presentation Form: raster digital data
The location coordinate data for picks from oil and gas wells are based on well location surveys reported by industry and may be accurate to within millimetres depending on surveying standards at the time of drilling.
Logical Consistency Report:
Data were checked for duplicates and there are no known issues with the data.
Null values are listed as -9999.
Completeness Report:
All vertical wells with available geophysical logs within the study area were picked, except in a few areas of very high well density.
Positional Accuracy:
Horizontal Positional Accuracy:
Horizontal Positional Accuracy Report:

Vertical Positional Accuracy:
Vertical Positional Accuracy Report:
For this dataset, the subsurface elevation of the picks in an oil and gas well was calculated by taking the elevation of the kelly bushing (KB) from the oil and gas well location survey, measured with respect to sea level, and subtracting the measured depth of the pick on the geophysical well log. In addition to human error resulting from uncertainty or incorrect placement of a pick on a log, and errors in the horizontal position of the pick location, any error in the ground surface of KB elevation value can result in vertical error of the pick elevation value.

Process Step:
Process Description:
From oil and gas geophysical logs, new picks were made in the borehole data management, visualization, and interpretation software, Petra, and exported from the corresponding database.
