Description:
Abstract:
This digital data release contains elevation values for the tops of Quaternary sediment units in the North Athabasca Oil Sands (NAOS) region in northeastern Alberta. Elevation values were derived from new picks from oil and gas geophysical logs and water well records, supplemented by a compilation of stratigraphic picks from published and unpublished sources in Alberta Geological Survey (AGS) holdings.
Purpose:
To provide elevation values of the near-surface Quaternary sediment units used for mapping the distribution of Quaternary sediments in the North Athabasca Oil Sands (NAOS) region.

Data Quality Information:
Attribute Accuracy:
Attribute Accuracy Report:
The elevation values and location coordinates have a varied degree of accuracy depending on the quality of the source data.
Logical Consistency Report:

Data were checked for duplicates and there are no known issues with the data.

Locations where the basal sand unit was not present were given a null elevation, listed as -9999. These values were recorded to improve modelling of the extent and thickness of where the basal sand unit is actually present.

Synthetic picks were also added where there were not enough boreholes to model the units.

Completeness Report:
All water wells and all vertical oil and gas wells with available geophysical logs were picked, except in a few areas of very high well density.
Positional Accuracy:
Horizontal Positional Accuracy:
Horizontal Positional Accuracy Report:
The location coordinate data for picks from oil and gas wells are based on well location surveys reported by industry and may be accurate to within millimetres depending on surveying standards at the time of drilling.
Vertical Positional Accuracy:
Vertical Positional Accuracy Report:
For this dataset, the subsurface elevation of the picks, measured with respect to sea level, is the value exported from the well interpretation software (Petra). The accuracy of these values are based on the original accuracy of the well surface elevation (kb for oil and gas wells, ground elevation for water wells). The surface elevation is thought to be less accurate from water wells than oil and gas wells. In addition to human error resulting from uncertainty or incorrect placement of a pick on a log, and errors in the horizontal position of the pick location, any error in the ground surface elevation value can result in vertical error of the pick elevation value.

Process Step:
Process Description:
From oil and gas geophysical logs, new picks were made in the borehole data management, visualization, and interpretation software, Petra, and exported from the corresponding database. Picks were also made on water wells, using the same software, but based on the lithologic descriptions from the well lithologs. Core descriptions, as well as picks from AGS Report 101, were consulted to inform the picking. Some synthetic control points were added to the dataset for modelling purposes. Some data from AGS holdings were used, mostly in the area near to the surface mineable oilsands deposits.
