Description:
Abstract:
This digital data release contains elevation values for the sediment-bedrock interface (top of bedrock) and overlying Quaternary sediment units in the South Athabasca Oil Sands (SAOS) region in northeastern Alberta. Elevation values were derived from a compilation of stratigraphic picks from published and unpublished sources in Alberta Geological Survey (AGS) holdings, supplemented by new stratigraphic picks from oil and gas geophysical logs.
Purpose:
To provide elevation values of the sediment-bedrock interface and near-surface Quaternary sediment units used for mapping the bedrock topography surface and the distribution of Quaternary sediments in the South Athabasca Oil Sands (SAOS) region.

Data Quality Information:
Attribute Accuracy:
Attribute Accuracy Report:
The bedrock elevation values and location coordinates have a varied degree of accuracy depending on the quality of the source data.
Logical Consistency Report:

Data were checked for duplicates and there are no known issues with the data. KB elevation values listed as -9999 were either unavailable or not applicable.

In the Quaternary dataset, points where the Empress Formation was not present were given a null elevation and measured depth, listed as -9999. These values were recorded to improve modelling of the extent and thickness of where the formation is actually present.

Completeness Report:
All vertical wells with available geophysical logs within the study area were picked, except in a few areas of very high well density.
Positional Accuracy:
Horizontal Positional Accuracy:
Horizontal Positional Accuracy Report:
The location coordinate data for picks from oil and gas wells are based on well location surveys reported by industry and may be accurate to within millimetres depending on surveying standards at the time of drilling. The horizontal positional accuracy of field site (outcrop) locations and locations derived from the interpretation of orthoimages is 10 m and 200 m, respectively.
Vertical Positional Accuracy:
Vertical Positional Accuracy Report:
For this dataset, the subsurface elevation of the picks in an oil and gas well, measured with respect to sea level, was calculated by taking the elevation of the kelly bushing (KB) from the oil and gas well location survey, and subtracting the measured depth of the pick on the geophysical well log. The subsurface elevation of picks in a water well was calculated from the elevation of the ground surface (source indicated on the table). Elevation values of bedrock outcrops are based on ground surface digital elevation model data. In addition to human error resulting from uncertainty or incorrect placement of a pick on a log or in the field, and errors in the horizontal position of the pick location, any error in the ground surface elevation value can result in vertical error of the pick elevation value.

Process Step:
Process Description:
Elevation values in this dataset were compiled from numerous sources, including AGS reports, external publications, outcrops located on provincial imagery, and water well records from the Alberta Water Well Information Database. From oil and gas geophysical logs, new picks were made in the borehole data management, visualization, and interpretation software, Petra, and exported from the corresponding database. Core descriptions, as well as picks from AGS Earth Science Report 2002-03, were consulted to inform the picking. The Sunday Creek Channel, reported in the Devon Jackfish 2 Project environmental impact assessment (Devon, 2006), was incorporated using control points for the bedrock topography picks. Some synthetic bedrock top control points were added to the dataset for modelling purposes.
